What are the symptoms of pregnancy?

The symptoms of pregnancy are not consistent in all women. If may differ in frequency and type. But in general, the only way to be assured of your pregnancy is by having an Ultrasound or Pregnancy tests. And further, the earliest symptoms of pregnancy may be similar to those of the phase prior to your menstrual bleeding.

Following are some of the significant symptoms of pregnancy, which still may differ from one lady to another-

Nausea- You may feel nauseous and may or may not vomit. It is morning sickness but it can happen at any time during the day or night. This is due to the rapid rise of the hormone Estrogen in the body which causes the stomach to get empty gradually. Even extreme smells like that of perfumes, cigarettes or any other strong smell may cause the feeling of nausea in pregnant women.

Fatigue or Tiredness- In the earliest days of pregnancy, you may get tired easily. This is caused by the increase of Progesterone hormone in the body. You may feel sleepy all day or even after doing a bit of work. It is caused by low levels of sugar and low blood pressure during pregnancy which tends to take up all your energy of the day.

Missed Periods- If you’ve missed your days of usual menstrual bleeding by a week or more, it is likely that you are pregnant. But for confirmation, you should get an Ultrasound or pregnancy tests done. It may be a misleading symptom if the cause of skipping your cycle is something else. So it is better to get the pregnancy confirmed.

Cramping- Some of you may feel cramps in your lower abdominal area in the first four weeks of your pregnancy. These cramps will be similar to those of menstrual cramping.
Slight Bleeding- You may have slight bleeding which will be in lighter color than the usual menstrual bleeding. It is spottier and earlier than your actual menstrual dates. This type of bleeding is also known as implantation bleeding.

Tenderness or Swelling in Breasts- You may get a feeling that your breasts become sore or sensitive in the earliest days of pregnancy. This usually occurs in the earliest phase of pregnancy and it gets normal as the time passes and you get used to the changes.

Mood Swings-  During pregnancy, it is common to have fluctuations in your mood. You may become unusually sulky or grumpy and emotional. These are just a few of the many symptoms which may occur during pregnancy.

How soon can you leave the hospital after giving birth?

Before you go to any maternity hospital for delivery, you must be eager to know about how and when will you be able to leave the hospital after you give birth to your little bundle of joy. Welcoming the baby home for the first time is a joy in its own.

To be specific, the number of days of stay at the hospital is not fixed, but varies from condition to condition and the general health of the mother and the child. If the baby is born through normal vaginal delivery, generally the doctors allow you to take the baby home after they perform a simple test (APGAR TEST) which is done to assess the good health of the newborn. Also, you need to take rest until the Anesthesia wears off.If they find any complications, it is addressed immediately so that the baby can go home healthy. APGAR test is performed to check the Activity (muscle tone), Pulse, Grimace (reflex irritability), Appearance (color of the skin) and the Respiration of the skin. It is performed immediately after the birth once by doctors and take hardly 5 minutes. Again, it is done after sometime to check whether the baby is able to adapt itself to the outside world in its first few hours.

Moreover, you need to take rest until the Anesthesia wears off. It can take upto 12 hours for the
epidural anesthesia to wear off. Only then you will be able to walk properly and get back the feeling in your legs. You may also need to stay overnight if you have any tear in the abdominal area which needs to be taken care of.

In case of natural vaginal birth of the baby, within 24-48 hours the mother and child are relieved by the hospital when there are no complications at any stage.
Some mothers choose to stay in the hospital overnight, when it is their first delivery. In consequent deliveries, they can leave sooner when everything is as expected.

When there is C-section or Cesarean delivery, at least 2-3 days of hospital stay is required for the complete recovery and good health. And that is when there are no complications involved. Post C-section delivery, the doctors make sure that you are able to walk around, go to the washroom, urinate properly and also eat and drink without vomiting. The exact days of leaving the hospital depends upon the above conditions and cannot be the same for everyone.

And even when you leave hospital post delivery, be in constant touch with your doctor, for the first few weeks so that you can consult them at any moment you need and also monitor your baby’s healthy growth closely.

In the initial post natal phase, make sure you have a healthy diet and have a lot of fluid intake. This is because you will be in the initial milk production phase. Eat whole grains, fibres, fresh fruit and vegetables. This is needed for the good health of the mother as well as the child.
